Spyware and viruses are both forms of unwanted or malicious software, sometimes called “malware.” You need to protect yourself from both.

What's the difference?

Spyware (sometimes called adware) collects information about you without appropriate notice and consent.

A computer virus spreads software, usually malicious in nature, from computer to computer.

Spyware can get installed on your computer in a number of ways. One way is through a virus. Another way is for it to be secretly downloaded and installed with other software you've chosen to install.
In short, spyware is a specific type of unwanted software that secretly collects your information. A virus is a specific way software can be secretly distributed, often by e-mail or instant messaging.
Both spyware and viruses can cause damage to your computer or cause you to lose important data.

Virus and spyware are malicious codes that plague roughly every Internet user. The difference between virus and spyware is that while the former can spread from system to system, the latter is planted in a system. But both cause damage in their own way.

Viruses spread from computer to computer and can even damage large networks or banks of servers. They usually spread through e-mail attachments and shared files. They slow down your systems or use mail programs to replicate themselves.

Spyware may not damage your system, but is equally dangerous. It is planted in your hard drive to steal details. You may get it when you download software, or when you visit a website that is not trustworthy, or inappropriate. It is not easy to get rid of spyware because it works in devious ways and keeps coming back.

Adware, which is another form spyware, is used to monitor your web usage. It is usually downloaded and installed along with some other software, without your knowledge. People often click on “I agree” to accept terms and conditions that are displayed when they download software. By doing so, they unknowingly agree to have the software installed on their computer. Adware may even be installed by some anti-spyware programs.

Your browsing habits are observed by adware and this information is used to deliver relevant pop ups. Your browser address may also be forwarded to a different page, even if you don’t want to access it. Some types of adware may track your keystrokes and send information about your passwords and credit card information. Adware can be exasperating and slow down your computer, though usually it is not a security threat.

It is most outstanding to use more than one anti-spyware program to keep your computer free of spyware. With new types of spyware being discovered every day, one program may not be effective in keeping your computer safe. “Adaware” and “Spybot” are some of the popular free anti-spyware programs.

Some anti-spyware programs scan your computer for free and show you a list of malicious programs that they have discovered on your computer. Then they ask you to sign up and pay, to have the spyware removed.

Many anti-spyware programs may not be effective, while others may install their own spyware, after removing the programs of their competitors. Some try to scare you by saying that your computer is infected, when all you have are harmless advertising cookies that are easy to remove.
So, you need to be careful when dealing with free programs.
